나는 서울의 청계천변에서 태어났다. 땅이 최고라며 땅투기에 열을 올리신 아버지 이동산씨와 현금이 최고라는 노담보 여사의 둘째 아들로 태어나 내 이름은 아버지 어머니의 이름 끝글자를 따서 이산보이다. 이름대로 나는 산보를 좋아한다. 산보를 하면 자연의 소리를 들을 수도 있고 마음의 안정이 되기 때문이다. 하지만 도시의 무분별한 개발로 점점 도시화 되어 가는 과정에서 산보할 수 있는 공간이 점점 사라지고 추억의 소리도 점차 없어지게 된다. 그래서 난 결심했다. 도시개발이 자연에 미치는 영향과 사람들의 행복지수에 미치는 영향에 대하여 연구를 하기로 결심하고, 건축학을 전공하고 대학원을 지질학으로 선택하였다. 졸업 이후 잃어버린소리찾기 연구소를 차리고 지나친 개발로 땅 속에 파묻힌 소리를 찾아내기 위하여 지질탐사를 시작하게 된다.
I
was born on the side path of Cheongye-stream. I was the second son of a man
whose name was Dongsan Lee, that worshiped real estate, and speculated land
with much enthusiasm, and a woman named Dambo No who thought that cash was the
best. The first and last letters of my parents added up to my name, Sanbo Lee.
As much as it shows through my name, I like going for walks, because I can hear
the sound of nature, and find peace in my mind. But, through the process of
imprudent land development, and the rapid urbanization, places to walk, and
memorable sounds disappear gradually. This made me determined that I should investigate how urban development impacts nature and the happiness of people.
I studied architecture at college, and majored in geography at postgraduate
school. After finishing my courses, I founded the Society for Lost Sounds, and started geological exploration to find
the lost sounds that were buried underground due to excessive construction.
김영성 (金英聲 꽃부리 영, 소리 성)
김영성은 인천 광화읍에서 출생하였으며, 관청리 소재 토지 대지주 김지역, 독실한 카톡릭 나소리의 독녀이다. 최초의 한옥 성당인 대한 성공회 강화성당에 어머니 따라 초콜렛 받으러 갔다가 세례를 받았다. 이후 C. John Corfe 선교사 옆에서 놀다가 영어를 배우게 되었다.
언어에 재능을 발견하고 서울의 이화학당에 유학을 간 뒤, 졸업 후 다시 서울로 돌아와 통역일을 하며 음성학을 전파하였다. 이때 지리적 특성, 기후의 영향 그리고 풍수지리적 특성에 따라 언어가 다르게 발달하는 것에 흥미를 갖게 되었다.
선교사의 추천으로 브리스톨 대학에서 음성학을 공부하며, 간간히 지리학과 지질학 수업을 도강하였다. 이 때에 스텔라 버로우스 박사의 논문을 읽고 감명을 받았으나, 개인적인 경험이 없어 더 깊이 알아보지는 않았다.
한국으로 돌아와 다양한 소리와 음성을 연구하기 위해 지방을 돌아다니다 제주도에서 우연히 현무암 속에서 해녀들의 깊은 들숨 소리와 화산활동이 중첩된 소리 발견하게 되었다.
이산보 박사는 서울의 막걸리에서 우연히 만나게 되었는데, 이때 잃어버린 소리찾기 연구소에대해서 알게되었다. 잃어버린 소리에서 오는 소소한 행복을 찾고 싶다는 이산보 선생님의 철학에 반하여 계속 그의 밑에서 음성 지질학에 관한 연구를 시작하게 되었다.
Young Sung Kim 金英聲 (Floral Sound)
Born in
Gwanghwa-Ub Incheon, Yong Sung is the daugther of Ji-Yeok Kim(meaning ‘field’
in Korean), landowner of a big field in Gwangha-Ub, and Sori Na(meaning
‘sound’), a devout Christian. Young Sung grew up around the first Korean
traditional Anglican Church in Ganghwa which was founded by missionary John
Corfe, who later taught her how to speak English.
Discovering
her talent in language, her parents sent her to study at the first girl’s
college in Seoul, Ewha School. Working as an interpret and educator of
phonetics after graduation, she grew very curious of how each language develops differently depending on the geological singularity, climactic influence and in
accordance to topography.
In order
to extend her curiosity, she decided to move to Great Britain and undertook studies at the University of Bristol. While her major was Phonetics, she often
sneaked in Geology and Geography classes. At that time she read a paper written by Dr.
Stella Barrows and although she was intrigued, having no personal experience
on that field, she took no further interest.
Upon returning to Korea, she traveled around the country to study various sound in
relation to phonetics. On a trip to Jeju island, she discovered a sound coming
from basalt rock; a sound that seems to be a mix of female diver’s deep
inhalation and an volcanic eruption.
She met Dr.
Sanbo Lee at a Korean Makkulli pub in Seoul, where she heard him talking about
having a similar experience. Learning about the 'Society for Lost Sounds' and
fascinated by Dr.Lee’s work of seeking sounds in Indiscriminate development,
she decided to continue her studies with him. Both of them have been
discovering sounds trapped and lost in the ground to rediscover the small bliss
of life.
